After several years of catering to private/corporate clients through various ensembles, I am turning the focus of Boston Swing back to our roots.

The Boston Swing lineup will always include client access to our talented friends (independent pop, soul, funk, motown and r&b front-line performers from around the country), but from here forward we are focusing our energy back on the sound that put us on the map in the first place:

The Rat Pack & American Songbook

I am embracing the philosophy of doing one thing…and doing it better than anyone else.

We will soon be releasing public performance dates and some exciting new productions.

For nearly 100 years, the American Songbook has influenced all styles of music.

As we approach the centennial of Sinatra’s birth (and so many other great artists who were timeless ambassadors for the genre), I’m beginning efforts to produce several themed productions.

Making use of our extensive chart library (over 1600 titles) and our extremely talented band mates, I have no doubt that our coming shows and music will honor the genre in a way which few bands can.

Thank you for supporting Boston Swing, in our now 14th year!

Very best,

Mark Mahar,
Crooner / Bandleader

JAZZ – a truly American art-form. From a small gin-mill or speak-easy of the roaring 20′s to the Golden Radio Era of Big Band, there is nothing more memory-provoking and American than a jazz “standard”. Often referred to as “The American Songbook”, the melodies and lyrics of these great songs have enamored listeners as a core part of the musical landscape for nearly a century. Songs like “At Last”, “Route 66″, “All of Me”, and “A-Train” – music unlike any other, which has the ability to universally serve as a soundtrack for an era, a romance, a film or a lifestyle.

Boston Swing offers various options for your jazzy event:

Instrumental Soloists (piano, guitar or a single horn for elegant atmosphere)

Trios and Quartets (small bands for intimate social cocktail hours and small private concerts)

3Horn Bands and Big Band ensembles (for a stage performance that emulates your favorite film soundtracks and recordings)

Complete any of our ensembles with a fantastic vocalist (you’ll certainly find one here)
Our Jazz Ensembles are not limited by running time or song selections (easily providing up to 6 hours of live entertainment if required).

RAT PACK ENSEMBLE – featuring Mark Mahar
As a lifelong fan and performer of the Rat Pack Songbook, Mark has assembled the best available resources for live performance of his favorite brand of music. Dedicated to the musical arrangements of those Iconic singers, Frank, Sam & Dean, any audience enjoying Boston Swing’s Rat Pack Ensemble will experience a performance which includes history, spot-on vocal impressions and a swinging horn band – lead by bandleader Mark Mahar.

Featuring titles like “Ain’t That A Kick In The Head”, “Saturday Night Is The Loneliest Night Of The Week”, “I’ve Got You Under My Skin”, “That’s Amore”, and “What Kind of Fool Am I”, Mark navigates the music of the Rat Pack Era with ease and style. Mark’s heartfelt tribute and a well-crafted big band sound brings to life the “ring-a-ding” of the Rat Pack Era.

3 Horns (more affordable and flexible ensemble, without compromising on that great big band sound).

This is truly a stage band and the most “concert style” format in our lineup. This is the same band that is featured in Mark’s ticketed dinner productions. Show running times range from 40-90 minutes for a single set.

FUNCTION BAND* – a human jukebox
Including Rhythm Section, Horns & Multiple Vocalists this band is designed to contribute to an amazing dance and party atmosphere. Presenting Funk, Soul Rhythm & Blues, Motown, Disco, Rock&Roll, and Pop, this band just screams “get up and dance”. Clients can choose from multiple vocalists and over 800 song titles for their event.
One recognizable song after another – performed with energy and commitment by a great lineup of talented musicians.

After a decade of performing weddings and corporate parties, our band has developed a core dance repertoire that leaves no stone unturned (the vast majority of our wedding clients will pick a few “must play” titles and leave the rest up to us). Your wedding guests will rave about the music and the memories they made on the dance floor, for years to come.

The difference between Boston Swing and the competition is that our band can change direction, handle requests and maneuver outside of our “set list” with the utmost ease – we aren’t locked into a short list of “the songs we know”.
Our individual musicians are all capable of conducting the band through their personal repertoire (and each artist has their own laundry list of titles that is NOT on our in-house songlist).

Typical Instrumentation is 3 Horns, 3 Vocalist, Lead Guitar and Rhythm Section.
Wedding Reception Entertainment is typically 4 hours
Classical Ceremony Musicians are also available.
Consider a Jazz Trio for your cocktail hour.

This ensemble featured at The Hard Rock Cafe – Boston.
* Boston Swing was the first jazz band to earn a performance slot at the new Boston venue
